NFL Kickoff: Who Are You Collecting?
Above the Mantel 039
We’ve reached the end of the dog days, Collectors. It’s NFL Kickoff time.
This week, eight head coaches and three rookie QBs will make their debuts with new teams. Throw in some high-profile changes of scenery – like Stefon Diggs in Houston, Derrick Henry in Baltimore, and Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles – and Week 1 is going to be packed with endless hope and potential, especially for collectors. With this season’s football cards just starting to hit hobby shop shelves, we have to ask: which players are you all in on? Let us know on Mantel.
Yankees Adding World Series Ring… in September
The Yankees wrapped their Grand Slam Auction last week with a collectible worthy of a champion. For $103,000, one lucky fan now owns a 14-karat gold 2009 World Series ring…engraved with their name. This custom ring, delivered 15 years after the Bronx Bombers last won a World Series, now holds the record as the most-expensive price tag for an item from the ‘09 team.
Auction Offers Chance to Own Dragon (Kind Of)
If the eighth season of “Game of Thrones” failed to appease your appetite, an upcoming auction from Heritage may be the cure. Over 2,000 items from the beloved series are hitting the open market, with price estimates ranging between $500 and $20,000. Obviously, screen-used dragon skulls are up for bidding, in addition to iconic items like Jaime Lannister’s armor and sword.
250-Year Old Coin Discovered in Toffee Tin
Recently, a private seller brought a slew of items to Wotton Auction Rooms in Gloucestershire, England – but their most valuable piece was quite literally buried treasure. Auctioneers discovered a rare, 1.5 inch American dollar coin from 1776 at the bottom of a tin. Although 6,000 were originally minted, only 100 are believed to still exist. The auctioneer beamed: “This coin represents a discovery that is in the top five of my career to date, and the sort of thing every auctioneer up and down the country hopes they’ll find.”
Film of JFK’s Final Moments Heading to Auction
Previously-unseen footage of the scene surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy is hitting the public through RR Auction. The minute-long film is available for bidding online, and is estimated to sell for over $100,000. The newly-discovered film was kept in a Dean Foods milk crate for decades by its previous owner, truck driver Dale Carpenter.
This specific moment in time is not believed to have been covered by footage anywhere else in existence. People Magazine provides the details.
